Pride and Prejudice

                Pride and Prejudice

Hello friends, This blog is an assignment by the Department of English, MKBU.

1) Which version of the novel is more appealing? Novel or film (adaptation)? Why?

-> According to me, a film adaptation is the appealing version. But if we read novels first then it could be more effective.

In the film adaptation, we could find expressions and notions of the camera, through that we could see the feeling of characters. In the film adaptation, the characters are alive in front of us so we can understand the concept properly with higher imagination.

This movie 'Pride and Prejudice' was directed very well by Joe wright. He did a very good job in every scene and concept. Even one single silence says so many things. It puts a great image of the novel and takes every scene according to the novel so it is very easy to understand the novel by film adaptation.

2) Character of Elizabeth

-> Elizabeth, the protagonist of 'Pride and Prejudice' by Jane Austen. She has such brilliant qualities in her character.

Elizabeth is a woman who is able to fight alone. She never needs a man behind her. She can challenge gender differentiation, social differentiation and cultural norms. She is the headstrong woman of this novel.

Elizabeth's character shows the pride situation in the novel so many times. She is a self respected girl. She makes decisions by herself. She is able to handle any situation. She gets so many confusion and surprises in her life but still she is able to make the right decision and she never fell down like her sister Jane. She handles her sisters and her parents very strongly.

She faces so many situations that she never imagined about that particular situation like the proposal of Collins and Darcy, the harsh truth of Wickham, the reality of Darcy, etc. But in all this situation she controls herself and makes the right decision. She is really an interpretation character for girls.

3) Character of Mr.Darcy

-> Mr. Darcy is the person that if we know him outwardly then he is egoist, self centred, prideful and narcissist. But if we can see him very closely then he is the kindest person in the novel. He is a kind hearted, helpful, lovable and gentle character.

He is an introverted person that cannot speak very easily to anyone. He observes everything and then makes decisions.

At the start of the novel we could find that Darcy will never fall in love with Elizabeth because he was a very prideful man, he always wanted to stand in superior and Elizabeth was totally opposite to him. But still Darcy is falling in love with Elizabeth.

4) Give an illustration of the society of that time.

-> In the novel 'Pride and Prejudice' there are social differentiation, gender differentiation and cultural norms.

Through such families that we see in the novel that shows the differentiation of culture and society. Money is more powerful than relationships and feelings. If you are rich then you get respect otherwise not.

Jane Austen also points out the differentiation of men and women that women always need men to survive in society. Women are nothing without a man. And also we could find that women have to get married at a young age.

This type of narrow minded things that we could find from society of that time.

5) If you were a director or screenplay writer, what sort of difference would you make in the making of a movie?

-> If I was the director of the movie 'Pride and Prejudice' then I would change the part of the first meeting of Elizabeth and Darcy.

I would put more effect on the scene of the backbiting of Elizabeth by Darcy. The whole concept of Pride and prejudice is led by this scene.

6) Who would be your choice of actors to play the role of characters?

-> Elizabeth - Deepika Padukone

     Mr. Darcy - Vicky kaushal

     Mr. Bingley - Varun Dhavan

     Mr. Collins - Ritesh Deshmukh

     Wickham - Arjun Kapoor

7) Write a note on a scene you liked the most.

-> I like one scene in the movie very much, when Elizabeth comes to realise the innocence of Darcy. This scene is very beautiful and sensitive. Here, Elizabeth fall in love with Darcy and she realises her prejudice. From this scene the whole story turns toward happiness.

They fall in love with eachother

8) Compare the narrative strategy of novel and movie.

-> These two things can be used for various purposes including entertaining and informing. Books make use of a written word to communicate with readers, on the other hand, movies utilise audio visual technology to communicate with the viewing audience. They both tell a story and give details and information about the story.

The movie was going to be very true to the book. All the dialogue was kept the same and almost the entire movie was going to be from the perspective of Elizabeth like the book. In the end, the dialogue in the film varied between being exactly the same as the book in some scenes, while most scenes had altered dialogue. This was done to help a modern audience better connect with the movie and the characters. The movie also features scenes from the perspective of Mr. Darcy, these are additional and not in the book. This was done to show Darcy as more human as well as to show the genuine closeness of his friendship with the character of Mr. Bingley.

The movie has other differences than just the dialogue. In the movie, Elizabeth keeps secrets from her family and grows apart from her older sister Jane. This is different from the book, while Elizabeth does become frustrated with events related to her family, she never keeps secrets from them. She also confides in her sister after difficult events, they never grow apart. The movie also portrays Mr. Bennet as a warmer, more sympathetic father than he is in the book. His role in the family misfortunes, caused by him spending money on the wrong things, is downplayed. His relationship with his wife is much more loving in the movie. However, the movie also makes the Bennetts look poorer than they were in the book. Elizabeth also comes across as much more bold and impatient in the movie, she never yells at her parents in the book.

I’ve read the book twice, both times for classes in high school, and I like it. It’s not my favorite book in the world, but I did enjoy it and found it enjoyable to read. I saw the movie after I had read the book, and I liked the movie also. Weirdly enough, I just knew the movie would be different from the book. I was expecting it. I’ve just noticed that whenever classics are adapted to the big screen, they tend to be circumvented. There is less attention to detail, side plots, and character development. I’m not quite sure why that is, I think it’s mostly for the sake of time and to make the movies more relatable to a modern audience.
