Thinking skills workshop

  Thinking skills workshop

"Thinking about thinking in order to improve thinking."   - Prof. Milan Pandya

13th August 2022 and 14th August 2022. We had a workshop on thinking skill by such a brilliant scholar professor Milan Pandya sir. He is working in Canada. He is a teacher, trainer and educator in the field of Thinking Skills i.e. Critical, Creative and Design Thinking, English Language Teaching & Communication Skills. With more than 12 years of teaching experience.

The first day he was talking about basic information about thinking skills. First he discuss about two type of thinking skills:

- Critical thinking

- Creative thinking

"If something is true then what has to be true".

Critical thinking is not just thinking over the truth, you have to think about what has to be true. Milansar gave this wonderful definition with so many examples and exercises. His extraordinary quality is to teach with day-to-day life examples that quality is very unique.

For critical thinking he showed us the photographs of Kareena Kapoor in an advertisement of soap, scene of 'Mohabbatein' serial, twits of Satish Shah, Kiran Bedi, Shraddha Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan and Sunny Leone. All these photographs and tweets need to think about their little faults.

Behind the truth there is something false, in this we need to think and it becomes critical thinking.

At the end of the session of first day, Milan sir gave a wonderful quote that,

"Your teacher might be wrong, learn to think for yourself"

-Tao te ching, by loo Tzu, 600 BC

On the other day, there was a discussion about creative thinking.

One small thing becomes more effective by creative thinking or one simple visual becomes more effective by creative thinking. Sir showed us some photographs and gave us an activity to think creatively over it. First he showed a bicycle photograph and then there were many photographs about our day to day life things like goggles, paper clip, toothbrush, etc. We can't imagine that this general use things have so many uses. It can be possible only by creative thinking.

Through this workshop we can understand what is creative thinking and critical thinking. Milan sir taught this topic very creatively that we can understand easily with interest. He kept the class lively and explained difficult topics in a very simple manner.

Pride and Prejudice

                Pride and Prejudice

Hello friends, This blog is an assignment by the Department of English, MKBU.

1) Which version of the novel is more appealing? Novel or film (adaptation)? Why?

-> According to me, a film adaptation is the appealing version. But if we read novels first then it could be more effective.

In the film adaptation, we could find expressions and notions of the camera, through that we could see the feeling of characters. In the film adaptation, the characters are alive in front of us so we can understand the concept properly with higher imagination.

This movie 'Pride and Prejudice' was directed very well by Joe wright. He did a very good job in every scene and concept. Even one single silence says so many things. It puts a great image of the novel and takes every scene according to the novel so it is very easy to understand the novel by film adaptation.

2) Character of Elizabeth

-> Elizabeth, the protagonist of 'Pride and Prejudice' by Jane Austen. She has such brilliant qualities in her character.

Elizabeth is a woman who is able to fight alone. She never needs a man behind her. She can challenge gender differentiation, social differentiation and cultural norms. She is the headstrong woman of this novel.

Elizabeth's character shows the pride situation in the novel so many times. She is a self respected girl. She makes decisions by herself. She is able to handle any situation. She gets so many confusion and surprises in her life but still she is able to make the right decision and she never fell down like her sister Jane. She handles her sisters and her parents very strongly.

She faces so many situations that she never imagined about that particular situation like the proposal of Collins and Darcy, the harsh truth of Wickham, the reality of Darcy, etc. But in all this situation she controls herself and makes the right decision. She is really an interpretation character for girls.

3) Character of Mr.Darcy

-> Mr. Darcy is the person that if we know him outwardly then he is egoist, self centred, prideful and narcissist. But if we can see him very closely then he is the kindest person in the novel. He is a kind hearted, helpful, lovable and gentle character.

He is an introverted person that cannot speak very easily to anyone. He observes everything and then makes decisions.

At the start of the novel we could find that Darcy will never fall in love with Elizabeth because he was a very prideful man, he always wanted to stand in superior and Elizabeth was totally opposite to him. But still Darcy is falling in love with Elizabeth.

4) Give an illustration of the society of that time.

-> In the novel 'Pride and Prejudice' there are social differentiation, gender differentiation and cultural norms.

Through such families that we see in the novel that shows the differentiation of culture and society. Money is more powerful than relationships and feelings. If you are rich then you get respect otherwise not.

Jane Austen also points out the differentiation of men and women that women always need men to survive in society. Women are nothing without a man. And also we could find that women have to get married at a young age.

This type of narrow minded things that we could find from society of that time.

5) If you were a director or screenplay writer, what sort of difference would you make in the making of a movie?

-> If I was the director of the movie 'Pride and Prejudice' then I would change the part of the first meeting of Elizabeth and Darcy.

I would put more effect on the scene of the backbiting of Elizabeth by Darcy. The whole concept of Pride and prejudice is led by this scene.

6) Who would be your choice of actors to play the role of characters?

-> Elizabeth - Deepika Padukone

     Mr. Darcy - Vicky kaushal

     Mr. Bingley - Varun Dhavan

     Mr. Collins - Ritesh Deshmukh

     Wickham - Arjun Kapoor

7) Write a note on a scene you liked the most.

-> I like one scene in the movie very much, when Elizabeth comes to realise the innocence of Darcy. This scene is very beautiful and sensitive. Here, Elizabeth fall in love with Darcy and she realises her prejudice. From this scene the whole story turns toward happiness.

They fall in love with eachother

8) Compare the narrative strategy of novel and movie.

-> These two things can be used for various purposes including entertaining and informing. Books make use of a written word to communicate with readers, on the other hand, movies utilise audio visual technology to communicate with the viewing audience. They both tell a story and give details and information about the story.

The movie was going to be very true to the book. All the dialogue was kept the same and almost the entire movie was going to be from the perspective of Elizabeth like the book. In the end, the dialogue in the film varied between being exactly the same as the book in some scenes, while most scenes had altered dialogue. This was done to help a modern audience better connect with the movie and the characters. The movie also features scenes from the perspective of Mr. Darcy, these are additional and not in the book. This was done to show Darcy as more human as well as to show the genuine closeness of his friendship with the character of Mr. Bingley.

The movie has other differences than just the dialogue. In the movie, Elizabeth keeps secrets from her family and grows apart from her older sister Jane. This is different from the book, while Elizabeth does become frustrated with events related to her family, she never keeps secrets from them. She also confides in her sister after difficult events, they never grow apart. The movie also portrays Mr. Bennet as a warmer, more sympathetic father than he is in the book. His role in the family misfortunes, caused by him spending money on the wrong things, is downplayed. His relationship with his wife is much more loving in the movie. However, the movie also makes the Bennetts look poorer than they were in the book. Elizabeth also comes across as much more bold and impatient in the movie, she never yells at her parents in the book.

I’ve read the book twice, both times for classes in high school, and I like it. It’s not my favorite book in the world, but I did enjoy it and found it enjoyable to read. I saw the movie after I had read the book, and I liked the movie also. Weirdly enough, I just knew the movie would be different from the book. I was expecting it. I’ve just noticed that whenever classics are adapted to the big screen, they tend to be circumvented. There is less attention to detail, side plots, and character development. I’m not quite sure why that is, I think it’s mostly for the sake of time and to make the movies more relatable to a modern audience.

Geoffrey Chaucer

Hello readers, I am writing this blog as an assignment by the Department of English, MKBU. Here, I'm trying to put an overview about Geoffrey Chaucer and his masterpiece 'The Canterbury Tales'.

The great author, poet and philosopher Geoffrey Chaucer was born in 1340 in London. The precise date and location of his birth remain unknown. He died on 25 October 1400 in London.

   Life :

The name Chaucer is derived from the French word chaussier, meaning a maker of footwear. The family’s financial success derived from wine and leather.Geoffrey Chaucer came from a well settled family. His great grandfather was tavern keeper, his grandfather worked as the purveyor of wines and his father John Chaucer Rose to become an important wine merchant with royal appointment. Chaucer also worked as a courtier, a diplomat and a civil servant as well as he was working for the king from 1389 to 1391 as Clerk of the King's Works.

Generally, his life is divided into three periods:

First period: First period of 30 years, includes his youth and early manhood, when he was influenced by French literary models.

Second period: Second period of 15 years, this was his active life and here he was influenced by Italian literary models.

Third Period: Third period of 15 years, known as the English period, was the time of Chaucer's highly developed. This was the period of his writing. He was still more influenced by French and it is shown in his masterpiece the contemporary tales.

Through these three periods we can see that Chaucer was first influenced by French literary models and in the second period he was traveling in Italy and met Petrarch and Boccaccio and by this Chaucer was influenced by Italian literary models. Chaucer produced works with much Italian influence after his Italian trip of 1373, whereas works written before his travels demonstrated French influence. In the third Period of his life he was again influenced by French, by this we found the love poetry of Chaucer that showed French tradition including 'The Romaunt of the Rose' and 'Saint cecilia'.

   His Works:

The Book of the Duchess :

Chaucer's first major work was The Book of the Duchess, an elegy for Blanche of Lancaster who died in 1368.

The House of Fame:

The House of Fame is a Middle English poem, probably written between 1374 and 1385,It was most likely written after The Book of the Duchess, but its chronological relation to Chaucer's other early poems is uncertain. 'The central theme of The House of Fame' is Fame, embracing the spheres of nature, death, heroism, love, chivalry, wisdom, conscience, virtue, fortune, myth, language, and poetry.

Anelida and Arcite:

Anelida and Arcite is a 357-line English poem. It tells the story of Anelida, queen of Armenia and her wooing by false Arcite from Thebes, Greece.

The Parliament of Flows:

This poem was written in the late 14th century. It describes a group of birds which gather together in the early spring – on ‘seynt valentynes day’ – to choose their mates for the year. It seems that the poem sparked a tradition.

Troilus and criseyde:

Troilus and Criseyde is usually considered to be a courtly romance, although the generic classification is an area of significant debate in most Middle English literature. It narrate the love story of Troilus, son of the Trojan king Priam, and Criseyde, widowed daughter of the deserter priest Calchas.

The Legend of Good Women:

The fourth and final work of the genre that Chaucer composed, it presents a “Prologue” (existing in two versions) and nine stories. In the “Prologue” the god of love is angry at Chaucer for writing about so many women who betray men. As penance, Chaucer is instructed to write about good women. And then he wrote this work.

 The Canterbury Tales :

The Canterbury Tales tells the story of a group of 31 pilgrims who meet while travelling from the Tabard Inn in Southwark to Canterbury. To pass the time on the journey, they decide to each tell two tales to the assembled company on the journey there and the journey home. The result is regarded as a masterpiece of medieval literature, and The Canterbury Tales holds a central place in English literature.

The Canterbury Tales is a collection of stories held together by the story of the pilgrimage. When the pilgrims begin to tell their stories, however, there is a change of gear. There is often a shift in form: ‘The Monk’s Tale’ is written in rhyme royal, ‘The Friar’s Tale’ is in rhyming couplets and ‘The Parson’s Tale’ is in prose. This formal variation is matched by contrasts in genre and tone. This interaction between the individual tales and the frame narrative is a layered and masterful exercise in characterisation – and one of the great joys of the work.

The Canterbury Tales is unfinished. The pilgrims never reach Canterbury, the return journey is not described, and not all the pilgrims who appear in the poem's prologue end up telling a tale. The Prologue describes a ploughman among the company, for example, whose tale is nowhere to be found. Whereas Chaucer’s original plan presumably envisaged over 100 stories, only 24 survived. Some of those are incomplete and others are taken from his earlier work.

Finally, we can say without a doubt that The Canterbury Tales was the first major work written in the English language and it endures as a masterpiece of English Literature.

Language of Chaucer :

It's difficult to read Chaucer's works, because he wrote it in the middle English language. If readers want to read Chaucer's real works then they should observe some general rules about pronunciations. In dealing with Chaucer's masterpiece, The reader is urged to read widely at first, for the simple pleasure of the stories and to remember that poetry and romance are more interesting and important than middle English. When we like and appreciate Chaucer, his poetry, his humour, his good stories, his kind heart. It will be time enough to study his language.

Thus, Geoffrey Chaucer is considered one of the first great English poets. Chaucer has been known as the father of English poetry. A model of writing to be imitated by English poets. He was the first poet of his days to write exclusively in English.
